FEB: FESTIVAL UPDATE: FAIRPORT'S CROPREDY CONVENTION, Banbury, Oxfordshire,
12-14 Aug: Pauline Black, 3 Daft Monkeys and, of course, hosts Fairport
Convention are amongst the latest acts to complete the line-up for this
year's 30th anniversary edition of Fairport's Cropredy Convention. - www.fairportconvention.com
PRIMAL SCREAM have
announced that they will perform their 1991 album 'Screamadelica' live,
in full, this November. The show will take place at Olympia in London on
27 Nov. Tickets go on sale on 26 Feb from somewhere or other....
ROTTEN SIDE OF THE MOON
- John Lydon has revealed that he'd like to re-record Pink Floyd's 'Dark
Side Of The Moon' with the band. A statement which may seem odd for a man
who once sported a t-shirt proclaiming: "I hate Pink Floyd".
Speaking to The Stool Pigeon, Lydon said: "I've no idea where I got [that
t-shirt] from, it being green, which was an oddity... not my colour. It
might have been something I nicked off a stall. You'd have to be daft as
a brush to say you didn't like Pink Floyd. They've done great stuff. They've
done rubbish, too. 'Dark Side Of The Moon', I love. But I go right back
to when they were with Syd Barrett. But I grew up with all kinds of music".
He continued: "Two years
ago when they came to LA, they asked me would I come on and do a bit of
'Dark Side Of The Moon' with them and the idea thrilled me no end. Well
no, it would have been very, very neat but it stunk a little in my head
of 'What am I doing here?' I came so close to doing it, [but] it felt like
I was trying to set myself up as some kind of pretentious person. I'm very
wary of the jam session end of things. I just don't want to do it. But
I wanted to do it. But just not when 20,000 people were there. I'd have
gone to a studio and played around with it there. But not for the bigger
picture. Privately. I'd love to go into the studio and do something with
the album with them". (CMU)

FEB: TWELFTH NIGHT for London... the cult 80’s prog rock
band are up and playing again. The Andy Sears fronted version of the band
with all their Art & Illusion and Blue Powder Monkey flirtations...
Well it really would be news if the late Geoff Mann was to be fronting
the band again wouldn’t it! Good to see the Mr Sears version exploring
things once more.. Wonder if they’re any good now? Twelfth Night play The
Luminaire in Kilburn, West London on May 28th. Lots more here with the
Organ preview page
BLAKFISH SPLIT MID-TOUR
- Birmingham post-hardcore types Blakfish have announced that they have
split. News which seems to have surprised most of the band as much as their
fans, particularly as they were mid-way through a tour with Biffy Clyro.
In a statement on their MySpace page, the band said: "There's no easy way
to say this, so we'll just jump right in. On Thursday 11 Feb in Bilbao,
Spain, mid-tour with Biffy Clyro, Sam [Vile, guitarist] decided to announce
that he could no longer continue as a member of Blakfish. This came as
a complete shock to us and everyone else on the tour.... This was in no
way a group decision and [we must] state that it is the choice of an individual
which unfortunately affects many other people".
The
remaining members of the band, Thomas Rock, Richard Hollywood and Robert
Fruit, have said they will launch a new project together in the near future.
FESTIVAL ROUND-UP...
In may still be bleak outside and snow may still be falling, no sign of
the sun or the cricket season or anything else festival shaped but news
is starting to flow it. We won’t be cluttering up these pages too much
with all these mostly corporate marketing opportunities for mobile phone
companies but here’s a flavour of what’s in the air right now... Aerosmith
for Download? Has anyone checked with Mr. Tyler (or whoever’s fronting
the band this week?)... Here you go, some corporate big ticket things,
the dreadful Download festival and the far more friendly 2000Trees are
all kicking in with news...

THESE MONSTERS play
what they describe as a London launch for their debut album this Friday
@ The Lexington, Kings Cross. Support comes from Shield Your Eyes
& Munroe Effect. The press release that we have suggest the
album isn’t out until late March on Brew records (with a limited edition
vinyl version coming out on Function Records), seems the notion of release
dates in a rather vague notion these days
15th FEB: DOUG FIEGER,
best remembered as the lead singer and primary songwriter for Detroit new
wave band, THE KNACK has died. Formed in 1978, the group seemingly
came out of nowhere with a huge hit, “My Sharona,” that has since become
a musical icon of the era, no one with ears and musical hearts could fail
to love those drums kicking in, there was a lot more to the Knack than
just that one classic single though. Doug Fieger also played bass in German
prog band, Triumvirat during the mid 70's. Doug Fieger, age 57, died of
cancer on February 14, 2010. He had been battling the disease for a few
years. Nice guy, bought a copy of Organ once, off one of our team in a
coffee house line L.A, bothered to get in touch about it... Our thoughts
are with Doug, his family and friends... You have to love The Knack

Seems COURTNEY LOVE
didn’t show up for her ‘secret’ London show at Proud last night, something
to do with getting caught up in a riot and yeah yeah yeah, who cares, blah
blah.. Bitches are playing with Divorce soon, enough of Courtney and her
nonsense, here the story if you want it...
She claims she was “being blocked into the street she was staying on while
a riot occurred nearby.. Courtney Love had been due to play at the Proud
Galleries in Camden, last night but due to police being called to a party
that got out of hand on Park Lane she was blocked in the premises. According
to the Telegraph police attended a scene where thousands of teenagers
flooded the street, with some climbing onto the roof of a five-storey townhouse.
Park Lane and Oxford Street were shut off due to the incident, resulting
in Love's detainment. "There was a stand off between the police and a huge
group of teenagers," an anonymous eyewitness was quoted as saying. "The
police had their shields and batons raised and the teenagers were stood
about 30 yards away being very rowdy. The atmosphere was pretty tense."
Courtney or Hole or whatever name she’s going under now, is playing at
the Empire, Shepherd’s Bush on the 17th Feb if you’re bothered...
First ‘Hole’ show in eleven years, not that many people who played eleven
years ago are playing...
WOBBLE COMMENTS ON PIL
REUNION - Original Public Image Ltd bassist Jah Wobble, aka John Wardle,
has been chatting about why he didn't get involved with the band's current
reunion. He told the BBC that he was asked, but ultimately turned the offer
down because he didn't agree with the way it was being put together.
Wardle said: "I was asked last July and I definitely did think about it
and talk about it to an extent, but it just wasn't the right move for me.
It just wasn't the way I would do it. I don't care, I think it's great
and I'm not bothered at all. I suspect with John [Lydon] it's about two
things - raising money efficiently and quickly, and reactivating the PiL
brand as his vehicle. That's just business. I wasn't just going to go along
with any old thing even when I was a teenager, so I ain't going along with
him now".
He added that the band should have played some smaller venues rather than
just Academy-sized set ups, saying: "No disrespect to the Academy scene
- I'm going to the Academy to see Tinchy Stryder with my two boys - but
I think PiL is quite a special thing. You shouldn't just take it to Academies
or Apollos. You should put some special show on somewhere, really special.
You go and do some very different venues. We could have done anything,
I still think that. I actually think now is a great time to come back and
shake things up politically a bit. You could get people going a bit and
have a bit of fun with people".

8th FEB: JAZZ LEGEND DANkWORTH
PASSES AWAY - The news broke over the weekend, much loved by the Jazz
World but really he was so much more, which is why we played a track on
our 'rock' radio show last night. I think we'd rather call him a music
legend rather than just a jazz legend.. Here's what our friends over
at CMU have to say this morning....
"Saxophonist John Dankworth, a true legend in the British jazz community
for over six decades, and an accomplished musical director who worked with
the likes of Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, has died in a London hospital
aged 82. His passing was announced by his wife, singer Dame Cleo
Laine, during a concert performed by her and the couple's children at a
theatre in the grounds of their Buckinghamshire home on the very evening
after his death. Which is a pretty remarkable demonstration of the 'show
must go on' philosophy. The news left the show's audience visibly moved,
and transformed the evening into a tribute of Dankworth's life. Called
"one of the totemic figures of British jazz" and the UK's "first major
jazz musician" by Jazzwise magazine, and dubbed, simply, as a "genius"
by pop jazz type Jamie Cullum, Dankworth won a place at the Royal Academy
Of Music aged seventeen, and, aside from a short spell in the army, worked
in music his whole life. In the sixties, he also became known as
a composer of movie and TV themes, and among many other projects penned
the brilliant opening music to 'The Avengers'. Having founded the Stables
Theatre and accompanying music summer school at his home in Wavendon in
1970, he later created the London Symphony Orchestra Summer Pops.
He continued to perform prolifically until he fell ill last October. Despite
his illness he still performed at last November's London Jazz Festival,
playing his saxophone from his wheelchair. All in all a truly inspiring
composer, musician and performer both within his own genre and beyond".

4th FEB: AMANDA PALMER
ANNOUNCES CONJOINED TWINS ALBUM - Dresden Dolls frontwoman Amanda Palmer
has announced the debut album from Evelyn Evelyn, her side-project with
accordion player Jason Webley and, so they say, conjoined twins Evelyn
and Evelyn Neville. In fact, Palmer and Webley list themselves as just
producers on the album, having apparently discovered the twins in 2007,
after which they released their debut EP, 'Elephant Elephant'. Now, I'm
not saying that's not all completely true, but Evelyn and Evelyn's voices
do sound suspiciously like those of Palmer and Webley, and the supposed
photographs of the twins look like they were taken quite a long time before
1985, when they are said to have been born. But, hey, what do I know? The
twins have their own Twitter account. And who ever heard of a fake twitter
account? Anyway, the big news is that the album features the recording
debut of Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain,
of course. She sings as part of a gang, along with Weird Al Yankovic, Tegan
And Sara, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, writer Neil Gaiman and
more, on a song called 'My Space'. You can fill your ears with that when
the project's eponymous debut album is released on 30 Mar. Plus, you'll
also be able to catch the twins live when they embark on a European tour
in April, which will include a headline show at Koko in Camden and a three
night residency at Bush Hall in Shepherds Bush.Songs and dates are all
up at www.myspace.com/evelynevelyn

REATARD DIED OF OVERDOSE
- Despite recent rumours of a homicide investigation, it seems certain
cult indie musician Jay Reatard died of an accidental overdose. Memphis
newspaper The Commercial Appeal quotes local medical examiner Dr Karen
E Chancellor as saying the late singer's death was caused by "cocainetoxicity",
with "alcohol a contributing factor". Reatard, real name Jimmy Lee
Lindsey Jr, died on 12 Jan aged 29.

AN EXPERIMENT SPLIT
- An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump have announced that they have
split up, which is no good. This means a UK tour that was due to begin
on Saturday will now not go ahead. In a statement, the band's D-Bird
said: "After almost two years together, we lay to rest one of the most
exciting, exhilarating and exhausting projects I have ever been involved
in. It all started off from an impromptu jam, an impromptu band formed
and within such a short time, the impromptu band went full time, touring
the world, recording with the likes of Steve Albini and meeting people
I could only ever dream we'd meet". She continued: "Rather than dwelling
on the reasons for ending I think it's important to look back and reflect
on a proud achievement. We had fun, I adored instrument swapping and more
than anything, I loved being on stage".
D-Bird, or Dee Blue to use
her new nom de plume, will now concentrate on her other band, Blue On Blue,
while C-Bird and X-Bird will go back to performing as a duo under the names
Eve Black and Eve White.

JAN: COME ON MUTE LITTLE INDIAN, PAY HIS RENT.... Just got this
thank you e.mail from EMIT BLOCH... “Hi Sean, Thanks for playin
Proububbly. Got a show at the Troubadour on Feb 2nd. Would love you to
come. If you recommended it that would be much appreciated. The album just
got 5/5 stars in UNCUT and XFM John Kennedy asked me to play his show -
hey, it softens my looming eviction notice for unpaid rent! (Feb.7) Emit”
Well we haven’t heard the album yet, but we are looking for to the gig
(at the Troubadour, here in London, we'll go if this month's rent don't
wipe us out!) and we do like the single lots and indeed we did play it,
here’s the notes from this week’s radio playlist... Seems Mute didn’t give
him that much money though, we got that bit wrong, or indeed One Little
Indian... Come on labels, get it together, pay Emit’s rent! (shall we Twitter
about it?) Come on you labels, you waste so much money of frivolous marketing
and the man can't make his music, hower low budget it is, if he dn't have
a kitchen, pay the music maker who makes the art in the first place, I’m
sure Emit’s rent bill is less that the A&R department’s monthly nose
powder bill... Come on. MUTE (owned by EMI these days, is the publishing
company, ONE LITTLE INDIAN are the record label, come one, sort your artist
out so he can make more great music).
The notes from this week’s radio playlist...
EMIT
BLOCH – Probububbly (One Little Indian) – So legend has it (already)
that Emit recorded this for a budget of £6 on a Sony cassette Dictaphone
as a demo, in his London kitchen, sent it off to Mute (who quickly became
his publishing company) and now that recording is coming out as a single
(on Feb 22nd). Mute gave him a load of money to make an album, but Dictaphones
are better than studios so he did all that the same way and kept the money.
The album – Dictaphones Vol.1 – comes out on One Little Indian
on March 1st. Rapid-fire lyricism and slightly ‘cosmic’ lo-fi alt.country
guitar styling is what this is – www.myspace.com/emitblochcountry
Emit plays the Troubadour, in London, on Feb 2nd
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE PREVIEW
'VISUAL ALBUM' - Animal Collective have released a trailer for their
long-awaited "visual album", 'ODDSAC', which premiered at the Sundance
Film Festival last week. Speaking about the film, the band's Avery Tare
said (to one of those glossy music papers) "We tried to make the music
go along with the visuals as much as possible. We didn't want it to sound
just like a soundtrack, but then we didn't want it to be like a music video
either". Director Danny Perez added: "It's kinda like a psychedelic film,
it's not like a narrative film or anything. There are more cohesive moments
in it, but then there are some that are a little more abstract". Watch
the trailer here:

last year is now (today!!) available for free download
from here for a limited period. We would be exceptionally grateful
if you would put something in your news section. We also have a few shows
coming up, 20th Feb with Chickenhawk should be awesome (and is free) but
if you would like to come to any others please let us know and we'll ensure
you're on the guestlist. Thanks Godzilla Black” Well they didn’t say where
the Chickenhawk gig is, here’s their My Space - www.myspace.com/godzillablack
– and here’s some words on said album....
"Disconcerting
and indescribable post-Kraut mayhem from Hell's own art school". Classic
Rock Magazine
"This one turns ears and grabs minds straight away, this is different,
this is good! Rumbling, rolling, new wave bite, a surf-kissed riff here,
an edgy roll there, and really like nothing that can be conveniently pinned
down... Alien tunes that will sail very close to the edge of your world".
Organ
"What is this weird shit? I put it into my stereo and I thought aliens
were trying to communicate with me. You half expect to turn round and see
Cary Grant disguised as a tree with one hand in your underwear drawer.
The multi-layered production gives the whole thing a dream-like quality
that makes you wonder if Godzilla Black haven't just created a new genre
of music – uneasy listening." Lobster Quadrille Magazine
"From Here To Clare is one of the most unsettling tunes to have graced
my ears in some time. So it starts off with burbling animal noises, builds
into a Hitchcockian suspense scene, before pitching down into a rumbling
surf riff, back into freakiness. Then it’s off again, rolling phasered
drums around, strafing sound effects on a forced march towards genius."

NO SLASH-WEAR AT GNR GIGS
THANK YOU VERY MUCH - I'm not sure I believe this, though it's one
of those stories of supreme pettiness that you long to be true. TMZ are
reporting that Guns N Roses fans wearing t-shirts featuring the band's
original guitarist Slash were asked to turn their clothing inside out at
a recent GNR gig in Canada, and to leave any Slash-inspired top hats at
the door. The gossip site says a security guard at the gig told them
the no-Slash-wear rule came directly from one of the gig's promoters, who
was presumably keen to save Axl Rose from having to spend the evening looking
out into an audience of Slash imagery. What with the former rock-mates'
famously long-running feud and Axl's band now being a weak imitation of
its Slash-era self. (cmu)

JAN: “Are Already ,. To by bushes, eccentric .. So stained ending,. A my
depot rapidity affair ., Not marble Carlsbad, sallies .. That no mission?
As Colonel disturb!!”
Do find this spam that comes impressively poetically creative, to by bushes
indeed, the answers are all there somewhere. And what will tomorrow’s weather
be like? The tragedy of a switchboard operator? Never mind any of
that, got the new EXTRA LIFE album on for the first time, whoooooooooooooooooosh!
This us just miles ahead and beyond everything. Miles ahead of everything
they’ve done before, may as well give up the idea of listening to anything
else, back back back, like you know who! So is the problem you people in
the USA have, the problem that most people sit around waiting for the handout
without doing any damn thing for themselves? Socialism only works when
everyone puts in the effort? Is that it? Same with bands and the idea of
an alternative DIY underground punk ideal really... If you can’t get it
together to get your music out to people like us then you can’t moan when
no one takes notice. We can’t play your music and champion your creativity
if you don’t bother sending in that creativity, simple mechanicals really
and I don’t want to be rude about it, but I do wonder why we bother? If
you don’t put in the time and effort and you don’t work out that support
is a mutual thing, that it isn’t just one way, if you can’t even be bothered
with a CDr and a second class stamp... Is that the problem? No one can
be bothered any more? Or is it just everyone for themselves?
Enough, places to go, radio show to run...plenty of other fish to fry on
the airwaves and is there really any point in anyone else trying when Extra
Life are doing so?

SLAYER RESCHEDULE UK DATES
- Let's hope it's third time lucky for Slayer's UK tour. The band have
again rescheduled their UK tour dates, which have twice been postponed
because of frontman Tom Araya's ongoing back problem. Here are the new
dates: 26 May: Leeds, Academy, 27 May: Glasgow, Barrowlands, 29 May: Birmingham,
Academy, 30 May: Manchester, Academy, 31 May: Nottingham Rock City, 2 Jun:
London, Forum, 3 Jun: London, Forum..
21st Jan: JANE'S ADDICTION
back yet again... The original line-up of Jane's Addiction has begun
work on new material this week, their second attempt since reforming in
2008, according to reports. Frontman Perry Farrell apparently wrote on
the band's Facebook page last week: "Monday we get together to write new
music and craft a future".
As previously reported, the band were brought back together by Nine Inch
Nails' Trent Reznor, who took them out on tour and attempted to get the
band writing new material again. However, things didn't entirely go to
plan. Farrell told The Pulse Of Radio: " I'll be honest with you, we started
to record and things got kind of ugly. You know, it's one of those things
where the headbutting really came out when we tried to write and people
were like, 'Well, I don't like that...' But you know what? I'm very patient,
because it's only been, what, eighteen years, so I can't expect things
overnight to be perfect".
20th Jan: Back, floods can't
stop us, one soaking we Organ archive and a mush of artwork and I guess
the U.S see thing fifferent to the rest of us, is Obama really considered
an "extreme liberal"? What a frightening country. We seem to have about
10,000 seven inch singles from the 90's from bands everyone has long since
forgotten about, Organland is sinking under the weight of all this stuff
that has been sent in. What should we do with them? Wahtever happened to
all these people? These bands? Some of them were good, most of them
only ever put out a couple of indie singles... the last century, another
world, boxes and boxes of old zines that people made...
YEASAYER, who release
their second album, 'Odd Blood', on 9 Feb, have announced that they will
play a one-off headline show at London's Koko on 26 May. While we’re
here, let us point you in the direction of the first single from the new
album, 'Ambling Alp', which you can download for free here: www.amblingalp.com
15th Jan: WEEDEATER MAN
SHOOTS HIMSELF IN THE FOOT... No, he really has! Dave Collins, frontman
of sludge metallers Weedeater, really has shot himself in the foot while
cleaning a shotgun. The band had been due to go into the studio with producer
Steve Albini to record the follow-up to their 2007 album 'God Luck And
Good Speed' later this month, as well as heading out on a brief tour, but
all plans have been put on hold while the remainder of Collins' foot heals.
Speaking about the injury, Collins said: "It wasn't my intention to shoot
off my big toe. This really f**king sucks and the pain is unbearable".

Jan LADYHAWKE artist caught up in the awful Haiti mess....
This
came to our attention today, via the Boys
Who Draw website, “it's a very sad piece of news related to the disaster
in Haiti. A friend, Sarah Larnach (who you'll know as the cover artist
for the Ladyhawke album) has had mega troubles with her family who where
working in the area.
"My sister Emily lives and works for the U.N. in Haiti with her family
(husband and 3 children), and they have been devastated by the earthquake
which struck on January 13th. As of right now, January 14th, only two members
of the family are accounted for."
In order to try and help Sarah is auctioning off original artwork to raise
funds for the relief effort. "This is the first time any of the artwork
related to the Ladyhawke self-titled album, or its singles, has been put
up for sale. I had been waiting for the right moment, and this must be
it. This painting, and cd's are being sold to raise funds for relief in
Haiti." Link
to eBay here.
13th Jan JAY REATARD
RIP... The Internet has been full of rumours of Jay Reatard’s death
tonight, seems it has now been confirmed by Goner Records and by this post
on the Matador
website: “We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka
Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible
for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to
have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly”.
MIGHT SYSTEM OF A DOWN
RETURN THIS YEAR? System Of A Down may return this year after a four
year hiatus. Then again they might not. Talk of the band getting back together
began earlier this week because - obviously - of a cryptic tweet from one
of the band's members. Bassist Shavo Odadjia tweeted "Are u guys
ready for System???" However, that was followed up yesterday by the less
vague and decidedly non-committal "About my 'are u guys ready for System?'
I'm not sayin we are back but, if so? U guys ready? SoRry for gettin u
guys amped. I'm just seeing". Still, looks like Odadjia might be lobbying
his bandmates for a return.
LOVE REVEALS NEW HOLE
LINE UP - Courtney Love has announced the all new Hole line-up, which
is a bit like Courtney Love the solo artist with a touring band but with
added trademark infringement. Love announced last year that her long
planned comeback album would be released and toured under the Hole name,
though without any of the other members of her former band. This led to
fellow Holer Eric Erlandson announcing that there is a contract between
him and Love barring her from using the band's name without his involvement.
Courtney denied that was so. As far as I'm aware that little dispute is
unresolved. But nevertheless, Love last week announced that she,
guitarist Micko Larkin, bassist Shawn Saily and drummer Stu Fischer would
be performing under a banner saying Hole on a mini-European tour next month.
So, that'll be fun. The new album will follow later this year. (CMU)

SANTIGOLD PRODUCES DEVO,
STARTS SECOND ALBUM - Santigold is keeping busy. She's just revealed
that she's recently been producing new recordings by new wave legends Devo
and is starting work on her second album. Speaking about working with Devo,
she told Paste: "It was amazing. They're just, like, my band idols. Them
and The Smiths. But Devo, I made them pull out the red hats and pose for
a picture". She continued: "I am starting my new record right now,
and I'm really excited about it because I've been on the road for three
years - literally, three years - and it's been a lot". On the subject of
her debut, 'Santogold' (which was eponymous back then), she admitted that
while it hadn't been a massive commercial success, it had exceeded her
expectations, saying: "I haven't sold a tremendous amount of records. I
haven't really hugely broken through on radio. And I'm definitely not a
household name. But this record did way more than anyone thought it would
do. I didn't even think anybody in the States would like this record. There
was no music out like it, and it was during a time when you had to kind
of fit in. Nobody was really checking for genre-less music. Certainly didn't
think all the different types of people would like it. I was shocked that
it was really so well-accepted in the whole hip hop world. [And] I was
really excited that people like Björk and David Byrne liked it".
SLAYER CANCEL TOUR AGAIN...
Slayer have announced that they are cancelling all upcoming tour dates,
including UK shows which had already been rescheduled from last year, as
frontman Tom Araya requires further surgery for an ongoing back problem.
Organisers are working to reschedule the shows for later in the year. The
band's manager Rick Sales said in a statement: "Tom gave various medical
treatments more than a fair shot but they just haven't handled the problem,
so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end
of this month. As unfortunate as this is for so many people, Tom's health
is the number one priority, and this has to happen".
FUTURE OF THE LEFT
will be on tour in the UK again later this month before heading into the
studio to begin work on their fourth album, their first since parting ways
with 4AD. Of the impending studio time, the band's Andy Falkous said: "Before
the process of starting each record I always say I want to write a pop
album and then our personalities get in the way. This time I'm hoping to
take the thing full circle and to channel the spirit of Freddie Mercury
through Slayer's back line". Tour dates: 16 Jan: Newcastle, Cluny,
17 Jan: Aberdeen, Tunnels, 18 Jan: Glasgow, King Tuts, 19 Jan: Manchester,
Ruby Lounge, 21 Jan: Nottingham, Bodega, 22 Jan: Leeds, Cockpit, 23 Jan:
Sheffield, Corporation, 28 Jan: Cardiff, Clwb Ifor Bach

Jaw dropping! (and we never

Grimm for Planaria, a split 7-inch with Parenthetical Girls where each

THE KNIFE TO RELEASE OPERA
- The Knife will release a recording of their opera, 'Tomorrow, In A Year',
in March. Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma and
based on Charles Darwin's 'On The Origin Of The Species', the project was
written in collaboration with Mt Sims and Planningtorock and received its
live premier in Copenhagen on the 2 Sep last year.
Says the duo's Olof Dreijer: "At first it was very difficult as we really
didn't know anything about opera. We'd never been to one. I didn't
even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just
getting used to opera's essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I
found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance
gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about
a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really
do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way
it brings forward a narrative. We've approached this before in The Knife
but never in such a clear way". The album will be released via Brille Records
on 1 Mar. You can download a track
from it here (CMU)
PANDA BEAR of Animal

2nd JAN '10: The sad news
of Gregory Slay, drummer with much loved (around these parts anyway)
US alternative rock band, REMY ZERO has just reached us. Gregory
sadly died on January 1st. Gregory Slay was 40 years 0ld when he passed
away from complications of cystic fibrosis.
A statement from the rest of the band has been posted on the O+S site (Cedric
LeMoyne’s current project) read like this: “Gregory Scott Slay –
our beloved friend, partner, brother, master musician, beautiful artist
– passed away this morning, January 1, 2010. He was in a peaceful place
and surrounded by his family. We are so grateful for the time we were allowed
with each other and for the wonderful opportunity to create with him for
so many years. Gregory inspired all who had the chance to see him perform,
to hear the music that he made or just to be around his bountiful spirit.
He will be greatly missed. With our deepest love, Jeffrey Cain, Cedric
LeMoyne, Cinjun Tate and Shelby Tate - the members of Remy Zero”
Remy Zero were/are held in high regard here at Organ, both as a band, and
as people, our thoughts are with the rest of the band and Gregory’s family.
A very fine drummer, indeed a master drummer, in a very fine band, and
a nice guy, sad news indeed. - www.myspace.com/remyzero
